Paramythia means "the Consoler" in Greek. The wonderworking icon of this name is kept at the Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos. According to tradition, the Mother of God warned the monks from it not to open the gate, because robbers were waiting outside, and so saved the monastery. For this reason the faithful turn to her when they seek consolation and protection from dangers they cannot see.
The Theotokos holds the Child on her left arm and raises her right hand to her face, and the young Christ in a golden robe sits turned toward her. The monograms ΜΡ ΘΥ and IC XC are written beside them in gold. The image is on a cut-out mounted over the wooden board, and the halo is in raised gold.
