Wooden Icon of Saint Sabbas the Sanctified

Saint Sabbas the Sanctified (439-532) is one of the great fathers of monasticism, founder of the Great Lavra in the Judean desert, which still bears his name. His typikon, the order of services, was accepted by the whole Orthodox Church, and services are still held according to the Jerusalem typikon. He is a Greek saint, not Saint Sava of Serbia - the Serbian saint took his monastic name after him. His feast is on 5 December.

The icon shows an elder with a white beard, in monastic dress and a red mantle, holding an open scroll that reads: "Whoever loves God, let him despise what perishes and place the knowledge of Him above all." The inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΣΑΒΒΑΣ is written in gold. The image is on a cut-out mounted over the wooden board, with a gold halo in relief.
