Wooden Icon of Saint Basil the Great

Saint Basil the Great (fourth century) was Archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia and one of the Three Holy Hierarchs, the great teachers of the Church. The Liturgy served ten times a year bears his name, and the rules he wrote for monks remain the foundation of monastic life. He gave his estate to the poor and built a hospital and a shelter for the sick. His feast is on 14 January (1 January in the Church calendar), the first day of the new year by that calendar.

He is shown as a bishop with a dark beard, in a white omophorion with black crosses, holding a Gospel book in a decorated cover. The inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΙΟΣ (Saint Basil) is written in gold. The image is on a cut-out mounted over the wooden board, with a gold halo in relief.
