Wooden Icon of Saint Ariadne the Martyr

Saint Ariadne was a Christian in Phrygia, in Asia Minor, who served as a slave in the house of a local ruler. When she refused to take part in a pagan feast, her master ordered her to be tortured, and she fled. According to her life, when her pursuers caught up with her, a rock opened before her and hid her. For this reason the faithful turn to her when they seek protection and a way out of a hopeless situation.

She stands at full height in a red maphorion over a golden gown, with a pale blue veil. She holds a cross in her right hand, and her left palm is open. The inscription Η ΑΓΙΑ ΑΡΙΑΔΝΗ (Saint Ariadne) is written in gold. The image is on a cut-out mounted over the wooden board, and her feet rest on a small wooden plaque.
