Here the Lord Jesus Christ holds a sword in his right hand, blade pointing upward, and steadies it with his left. The sword is not a weapon of war but an image of the word of God, which, as the Epistle to the Hebrews says, is "living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword". It is the sword of the Spirit, a sign of the truth that exposes every lie.
Christ wears robes in warm ochre and orange, and the letters IC XC are written in red beside the halo. The board is arched, its centre recessed and gilded, and the image is printed on a cut-out mounted in that gold field. The halo is raised and decorated with a gold pattern.
