This icon depicts one of the most moving scenes in Orthodox devotion - the Most Holy Mother of God pressing her cheek to her Son. Their faces meet in a quiet, sorrowful embrace, while behind them rises the cross bearing the inscription INRI. It is a scene of tenderness and suffering at once: a Mother holding Christ beneath the cross, in the moment between sacrifice and the hope of the Resurrection. Beside the figures stand the Greek monograms - ΙΣ ΧΣ for Jesus Christ and ΜΡ ΘΥ for the Mother of God - which in iconography denote the Lord and His Mother. The composition is spare and gathered, so that all attention rests on that intimate touch of the two faces.
Before this icon, the faithful pray to the Mother of God as intercessor and comfort in hours of grief, illness, or loss - to the One who herself knows what it means to sorrow for a beloved. Its place is in the icon corner of the home, beside the vigil lamp, but also in a quiet corner of a room where one looks for solace and peace. As a gift, it is fitting for someone going through a difficult time, for a mother, or for anyone who seeks nearness and mercy in the Mother of God.
