Tenderness (Greek Eleusa - "Merciful", "Sweet-loving") is one of the warmest iconographic types of the Most Holy Theotokos. The Theotokos holds the young Christ in her arms, and He presses His cheek against hers, while she gently inclines her head toward her Son - a scene that unites a mother's tenderness with a quiet foreboding of the suffering to come. She is wrapped in a dark red (burgundy) maphorion with a star on her forehead, the ancient sign of her virginity before, during, and after the birth of Christ. Greek inscriptions confirm who is depicted: ΜΡ ΘΥ (Mother of God) beside the Theotokos and ΙΣ ΧΣ (Jesus Christ) beside the Child. The little Christ is dressed in a light robe and holds on to His mother with one hand.

Before the icon of the Theotokos of Tenderness, the faithful pray for peace in the home, harmony in the family, the protection of children, and comfort in difficult moments, honoring the Theotokos as an intercessor who prays before her Son. The icon finds its place in the holy corner of the home, on the family iconostasis, or in a prayer nook, and many gladly keep it in a child's room as well. It makes a moving gift for a baptism, wedding, motherhood, family patron-saint day (krsna slava), or name day, as well as for the great Marian feasts - the Lesser and Greater Feasts of the Mother of God (Mala and Velika Gospojina), the Presentation of the Theotokos, or the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos.
