The Theotokos of Blachernae is one of the oldest and most venerated images of the Most Holy Mother of God in the Orthodox tradition, tied to the famous Church of Blachernae in Constantinople. On this icon the Most Holy is shown in a prayerful posture (Orans), with her hands raised, bearing upon her breast a medallion with the image of the young Christ. Above her are the walls of Constantinople and a fleet at sea, a reminder of the Mother of God as protectress of the city and of all who turn to her in faith. The Greek inscription Η ΠΑΝΑΓΙΑ ΤΩΝ ΒΛΑΧΕΡΝΩΝ confirms her identity - the Most Holy of Blachernae. Her raised hands and gentle gaze call the faithful to prayer and to surrender to God.
