The Myrrh-bearing Women at the Tomb of Christ

The Myrrh-bearing Women - Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and the others - were the first to hear the news of the Resurrection. They set out in the early morning, before dawn, to anoint Christ with spices, and found an angel at the open, empty tomb. This icon depicts that first moment: two women in dark robes stand on the left, carrying spices and tears, while an angel in a dazzling white robe with red wings sits on the stone beside the open sarcophagus with the empty burial cloths. The gold background illuminates the scene, and the Greek inscription IAQ Ο ΤΟΠΟΣ ΟΠΥ ΕΚΕΙΤΟ Ο ΚΥΡΙΟΣ (Behold the place where the Lord lay) confirms the meaning of the scene. Decorative arabesques in the corners frame the composition.

The Sunday of the Myrrh-bearing Women is celebrated on the third Sunday after Pascha. The Church sees in these women the first heralds of the Resurrection - and in that sense this icon speaks especially to all who carry faith and bear witness in silence, without high positions or public honours.
