This image does not belong to Byzantine iconography but to the Western, Roman Catholic devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which took its settled form in the nineteenth century. The manner of depiction differs accordingly: the face is painted naturalistically, with shadow and perspective, rather than in the strict Byzantine line. The Virgin wears a blue mantle and a white veil; her hands open her garment to show a flaming heart crowned with thorns and pierced by a sword, a cross above it, and beside the heart a sprig of white lily.
The symbols read clearly even without knowing the Western tradition: the crown of thorns is the pain the Mother shares with her Son, the sword is the prophecy of the elder Simeon that a sword would pierce her soul too, and the lily is purity. The image is chosen by those to whom that maternal side of faith speaks loudest, and in homes where both the Western and the Eastern tradition are honoured. On this piece the image is transferred onto a dark board with a gilded ground whose edge is cut in a wave.
A note on origin: the Immaculate Heart is a Western (Roman Catholic) subject, not an Orthodox icon. We state this openly so that everyone knows what they are buying.

Delivery

Icons are sent by courier, with proof of delivery. Packaging is twofold - an inner layer with protective foam and an outer cushioning layer for safe transport.
