The First Steps of Christ

The icon "The First Steps of Christ" shows a rare and moving scene from the childhood of the Lord Jesus Christ - the infant Christ takes his first steps and reaches out toward the Most Holy Theotokos, who lovingly bends down with open arms to receive him. In the background stand the houses of a town and a rocky landscape, and at the top is the red Greek inscription ΤΑ ΠΡΩΤΑ ΒΗΜΑΤΑ ΤΟΥ ΙΣ ΧΣ - "The First Steps of Jesus Christ". The Theotokos is in a dark-red (burgundy) maphorion and a blue robe, with the monogram ΜΡ ΘΥ (Mother of God), and the infant Christ has a cross-marked halo.
