Palm Sunday - the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem - is a feast that precedes Holy Week and carries within it both joy and mystery. The people of Jerusalem receive Christ as a king, spread garments and wave palm branches with cries of "Hosanna!", yet He enters not on a war horse but on a humble white donkey - quietly and peacefully. The icon depicts that panoramic scene with all its layers: Christ with the disciples approaching from the left, the crowd with branches receiving Him from the right, and in the middle a child stretching out a cloak before the donkey. Palm branches descend along the rocks of the Mount of Olives. The blue background gives the scene an open, airy atmosphere. The Greek inscription Η ΒΑΙΟΦΟΡΟΣ (Procession with Branches - Palm Sunday) names the feast.
The Church celebrates Palm Sunday on the Sunday before Pascha. This feast is also the day when willow branches are blessed - the symbol Serbs have preserved in the northern tradition in place of palm.
