The Beheading of St. John the Baptist is one of the most tragic and most spiritually profound events in the Gospel narrative. St. John the Baptist was arrested because he openly told King Herod that he had no right to live with his brother's wife Herodias. At a feast, Herodias's daughter Salome demanded a reward for her dance - the severed head of John. The icon depicts the culminating moment: a soldier in golden armour with a sword raised over the kneeling John, whose head is crowned with the halo of sainthood. Beside him a young woman kneels with a platter. The prison tower and walls in the background testify to the place of the event. The gold background contrasts the drama and gives the scene an awareness of the eternal dimension of the sacrifice. The Greek inscription Η ΑΠΟΤΟΜΗ ΑΓ ΙΩΑΝΝΟΥ ΤΟΥ ΠΡΟΔΡ ΟΜΗ names the feast.

The Church celebrates the Beheading on 29 August (11 September by the new calendar) as a day of strict fasting, not celebration. This icon is a reminder that true witnesses to the truth pay a price - and that price, according to tradition, is the entrance into eternity.
