The Annunciation is a feast that holds within it all the joy of the Christian faith: in that one moment, in one room, heaven opened. Archangel Gabriel stands before the Mother of God with a lily in his hand - a symbol of purity and a message of peace - and brings the news that changed the world. Mary sits and receives the message in silence and faith. The icon bears a shimmering gold background, the architecture of the space surrounding the figures, and the Greek inscription Ο ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΣΜΟΣ ΤΗΣ ΘΕΟΤΟΚΟΥ (The Annunciation of the Theotokos). The rustic MDF base of irregular shape gives this scene the impression of an ancient fresco fragment.
The Annunciation is celebrated on 25 March (7 April by the new calendar) and is one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church. In Serbian tradition this feast carries special reverence - the day when Mary said: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word."
