The Theotokos in a deep red maphorion holds the Child in her arms and raises her hand to her face, and the young Christ in a golden robe lies in her lap looking up at her. The background is gold, with an ornamental pattern around the halo, and the monograms ΜΡ ΘΥ (Mother of God) are written in red at the top.
The icon is framed by a carved wooden arch joined to a wooden stand, so it stands on its own and needs no wall. The edge of the arch is roughly carved and darkened, and the stand is flat and steady. An icon like this belongs where there is no wall for an icon: on a bedside table, a desk or a bookshelf.
