Here the Theotokos holds the Christ Child on her left arm and points to him with her right hand. That gesture gives the type its name, Hodegetria, She Who Shows the Way: the Mother of God does not point to herself but to the way, and the way is Christ. The young Christ blesses with his right hand and holds a scroll in his left.
The Theotokos wears a deep red maphorion with stars, and the Child pale blue and orange robes, on a gold background with an ornamental pattern and the red monogram ΜΡ ΘΥ. The icon is framed by a carved wooden arch on a stand, so it stands on its own on a shelf, a desk or in an icon corner.
