Synaxis of the Holy Twelve Apostles

The Greek inscription across the top reads Η ΣΥΝΑΞΙΣ ΤΩΝ ΑΓΙΩΝ ΔΩΔΕΚΑ ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΩΝ - the Synaxis of the Holy Twelve Apostles. The apostles stand in three rows on green ground, each with his halo and his recognisable face. In the front row, at the centre, Saint Peter with the keys at his belt and Saint Paul with a scroll hold a white church with a red roof; within it one can see the altar table and a hanging lamp. That church in their hands is not a building but the Church herself - what grew from twelve fishermen and tax collectors into a community that has lasted two millennia.

The Synaxis of the Apostles is kept immediately after the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, as the day on which the Church remembers all twelve together - both those whose names everyone knows and those of whom little is recorded. The icon is therefore often chosen for churches and parish halls, but equally for a home where common life is valued. Before it one prays for concord in the family, for the courage to confess the faith in word and deed, and for a blessing on those who work in community.
