Saint Cosmas of Aetolia was a monk of Mount Athos and one of the greatest Orthodox preachers of the 18th century. Born in Aetolia in western Greece, he left the peace of the monastery and set out on a years-long missionary journey through Greece and the Balkans, awakening faith among the people, founding schools, and calling people to repentance. Because of his bold word, he suffered martyrdom in 1779, and the Church honors him as equal-to-the-apostles - equal to the apostles in zeal. On this icon he is shown as an elder with a long grey beard, in a dark-blue monastic robe and with a round monastic cap, while in his hands he holds a traveler's staff and a prayer rope - signs of a tireless traveler and man of prayer. The Greek inscription "Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΚΟΣΜΑΣ Ο ΑΙΤΩΛΟΣ" means "Saint Cosmas of Aetolia".

The faithful pray to Saint Cosmas for the strengthening of faith, for the enlightenment of the mind, for a blessing in learning and preaching, as well as for protection on the road. The icon finds its place in the holy corner of the home, on the family iconostasis, or in a prayer nook, and it is especially dear to teachers, educators, and all who spread the word of God. It also makes a worthy gift for a family patron saint's day (slava), a baptism, or a name day, as well as a blessing for someone setting out on an important journey in life. Saint Cosmas of Aetolia is celebrated on August 24.
