Saint Eustathius, known before his baptism as Placidas, was a distinguished Roman general. While hunting, he saw a stag between whose antlers shone a cross bearing the image of Christ - that moment led him to faith and baptism, when he received the name Eustathius. Like the righteous Job, he passed through the loss of his family and possessions, and then through the joy of their reunion, only in the end to suffer for Christ as a great martyr, together with his wife Theopiste and his sons Agapius and Theopistus. On this icon he is depicted as a warrior, in military attire with a spear in hand and a golden halo. The Greek inscription "Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΕΥΣΤΑΘΙΟΣ" means "Saint Eustathius".
The faithful pray to Saint Eustathius for faith in times of temptation, for patience in troubles, and for the preservation of the family, and hunters also honor him as their patron. This icon with a vigil lamp makes a ready-made prayer corner - the lit lamp beside the image of the saint brings warmth and peace to the holy corner of a home or to a home iconostasis. It makes a beautiful and meaningful gift for a Krsna Slava (family patron saint feast), a baptism, a name day, or as a blessing for the home. Saint Eustathius is celebrated on September 20 by the church calendar (October 3 by the new calendar).
