The Holy Emperor Constantine the Great, Equal-to-the-Apostles, was the first Christian Roman emperor who, with the Edict of Milan in 313, granted freedom to the Christian faith and put an end to the persecution of Christians. His mother, Saint Empress Helena, in her deep old age traveled to Jerusalem and, according to tradition, found the Precious Cross on which the Lord Jesus Christ was crucified. On this icon both are depicted in imperial robes and with crowns, and between them the Cross stands upright, symbolizing their shared merit in the victory and the rise of Christianity. The Greek inscriptions "Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΚΩΝΣΤΑΝΤΙΝΟΣ" and "Η ΑΓΙΑ ΕΛΕΝΗ" mean "Saint Constantine" and "Saint Helena." The gold background emphasizes their holiness and imperial dignity.
The faithful pray to Saint Emperor Constantine and Empress Helena for the strengthening of faith, for wisdom, and for the protection of family and home, and they are especially venerated by all who bear the names Constantine and Helena. The icon has its place in the home's holy corner, on a family iconostasis, or in a prayer nook. It makes a precious gift for a patron saint's day (krsna slava), a name day, a baptism, or a wedding. Their joint feast day is celebrated on June 3 (May 21 by the old calendar).
