Saint Alexius, Man of God

Saint Alexius, Man of God, is a Christian ascetic from Rome who became renowned for his extreme humility and renunciation of earthly wealth. According to tradition, he was the son of a distinguished Roman nobleman, yet while still young he left his home, estate, and honors to live as a poor man and pilgrim, in fasting and unceasing prayer. On this icon he is depicted as a mature man with an ascetic face, dark hair and beard, in a dark red mantle over a simple, light tunic. In his right hand he holds a small cross - a sign of confession and suffering for the faith - while his left hand is raised with an open palm, in a sign of surrender to God. The Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΑΛΕΞΙΟΣ Ο ΑΝΘΡΩΠΟΣ ΤΟΥ ΘΕΟΥ means "Saint Alexius, Man of God".

The faithful pray to Saint Alexius for humility, patience, and the strength to give up what is superfluous, as well as for the protection of the poor, pilgrims, and all who seek a quiet, God-pleasing life. His feast day is celebrated on March 17. The icon finds its place in the holy corner of the home, on a family iconostasis, or in a prayer nook, where it gathers the family for shared prayer.
