This icon depicts the Holy Trinity through an Old Testament scene known as the Hospitality of Abraham. According to the Book of Genesis, the patriarch Abraham received three travelers - three angels - at the Oak of Mamre, in whom Orthodox tradition recognizes the revelation of the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The three angels sit around the table, their heads slightly inclined toward one another, and in the center of the table stands a chalice (cup) that foreshadows the sacrifice and the holy mystery of Communion. In the background one can make out Abraham's home, the Oak of Mamre, and the mountain. The composition faithfully follows the famous work of Andrei Rublev, one of the best-known in the history of iconography.
Before the icon of the Holy Trinity, the faithful pray for harmony and peace in the home, for the unity of the family, and for a blessing in every undertaking. The icon holds a place of honor in the home's icon corner, on the family iconostasis, or in a prayer nook. It makes a precious gift for the patron saint feast of the Holy Trinity (Trinity Day), for Pentecost, as well as for a baptism, wedding, or the blessing of a home. The feast of the Holy Trinity - the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles - is celebrated on the fiftieth day after Easter (Pascha).
