Holy Three Hierarchs (gold background)

This icon depicts the Holy Three Hierarchs - Saint Basil the Great, Saint John Chrysostom and Saint Gregory the Theologian - the three greatest fathers and teachers of the Church from the fourth century. The Greek inscription at the top, ΟΙ ΑΓΙΟΙ ΤΡΕΙΣ ΙΕΡΑΡΧΑΙ, means "The Holy Three Hierarchs", and above each saint his name is written: Basil, Chrysostom and Gregory. All three are shown in full hierarchical vestments, with an omophorion adorned with crosses; Saint Basil blesses with his right hand, while Saint John Chrysostom and Saint Gregory hold the Gospel in their hands as a sign of their preaching and teaching ministry. Saint Basil the Great composed the renowned Divine Liturgy and organized Christian charity, Saint John was called Chrysostom ("Golden-mouthed") for his exceptional eloquence and his liturgy is the one most often served in the Orthodox Church, while Saint Gregory received the name Theologian for the depth of his theology. Their shared feast day was established in order to settle the dispute over which of them was the greatest, for they are equal before God.

The faithful pray to the Holy Three Hierarchs for wisdom, enlightenment and help in learning, and they are especially honored by teachers, pupils, students, theology students and priests as patrons of knowledge and Orthodox education. The icon has its place in the home's icon corner, on a family iconostasis or in a prayer nook, as well as in schools, classrooms and workplaces. It makes a beautiful and meaningful gift for a krsna slava (family patron saint day), a name day, a baptism or the start of school, as well as a present for clergy and educators. The feast of the Holy Three Hierarchs is celebrated on January 30 by the church calendar, that is, February 12 by the civil calendar.
