The Holy Family (bordeaux frame)

The icon of the Holy Family depicts three figures united in quiet tenderness: the Most Holy Theotokos in a deep red maphorion, Saint Joseph the Betrothed with a grey beard gently inclining his head toward his family, and the little Christ in the center, in a bright garment. The Greek inscription at the top, "Η ΑΓΙΑ ΟΙΚΟΓΕΝΕΙΑ", means "The Holy Family", while the inscription beside the elder figure, "Ο ΑΓ. ΙΩCΗΦ Ο ΜΝΗCΤΩΡ", identifies Saint Joseph the Betrothed. Beside the Theotokos stand the letters "ΜΡ ΘΥ" (Mother of God), and beside the child "ΙC ΧC" (Jesus Christ). At the bottom the icon is also inscribed in Latin script - "THE HOLY FAMILY". The gold background and the calm, warm gazes of the figures give the whole scene the warmth of home and a sense of family unity.

Before this icon the faithful pray for harmony and peace in the family, for the health and flourishing of children, and for the blessing of the home. Its place is in the icon corner, on the household iconostasis, or in a prayer nook of the living space - wherever the family gathers. Because of its theme, it makes a warm gift for a wedding, for young married couples, for moving into a new home, as well as for a baptism or a family patron-saint feast (krsna slava). In the Orthodox tradition, Saint Joseph the Betrothed is venerated as the guardian and protector of the family hearth.
