Saint Catherine of Alexandria was a learned young woman from a noble family, renowned for her great wisdom and her knowledge of philosophy. According to tradition, before Emperor Maximinus she outwitted fifty pagan philosophers and led many of them to the Christian faith, for which she suffered as a great martyr. The Greek inscription "Η ΑΓΙΑ ΑΙΚΑΤΕΡΙΝΑ" means "Saint Catherine". On this icon she is shown with a royal crown and one hand placed on her chest, while a crucifix appears in the background - a sign of the faith for which she suffered. Beside her are the spiked wheel, the instrument of her torture, along with open books, scrolls and an owl - symbols of her learning and enlightened mind. In the background rise the mountains of Sinai, where the monastery dedicated to her still stands today.
The faithful pray to Saint Catherine for wisdom, enlightenment of the mind and help in study, and she is especially honored by pupils, students and all who seek knowledge. The icon finds its place in the home's holy corner, on a family iconostasis or in a prayer nook. It makes a beautiful and meaningful gift for a patron saint feast (slava), a baptism, a name day or a wedding, especially for those who bear the name Catherine. Saint Catherine is celebrated on November 24 (December 7 by the new calendar).
