Saint Helena was the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great and one of the most venerated women in the history of Christianity. Late in her life she traveled to Jerusalem where, according to tradition, she discovered the Holy Cross on which the Lord Jesus Christ was crucified, which is why she is almost always depicted holding a cross in icons. In this icon she wears an imperial crown and a lavish, jewel-adorned robe with a red mantle scattered with golden stars, while holding a large ornate cross in her hands. The Greek inscription Η ΑΓΙΑ ΕΛΕΝΗ means "Saint Helena". Because of her works for the faith, the Church honors her as Equal-to-the-Apostles.
The faithful pray to Saint Helena for firmness in faith, for blessing and peace within the family, and for the strength to devote their works to God. The icon finds its place in the home's icon corner, on the family iconostasis, or in a prayer nook, and it is also a meaningful gift for a patron saint feast (krsna slava), a baptism, a name day, or a wedding. Saint Constantine and Empress Helena are celebrated together on June 3, a day known as Konstantinovdan, which many Serbian families keep as their patron saint feast.
