Holy Empress Alexandra was the wife of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, one of the fiercest persecutors of Christians. Witnessing the suffering and steadfastness of the Holy Great Martyr George, she openly confessed her faith in Christ before the emperor and his court, for which she too was condemned to a martyr's death. On this icon she is depicted as an empress - with a precious crown upon her head and a white veil, in a sumptuous red-and-gold robe adorned with pearls and jewels. In her hand she holds a cross, a sign of martyrdom and of faithfulness to Christ to the end, while her other palm is open in a gesture of confessing the faith. The Greek inscription "Η ΑΓΙΑ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΑ" means "Saint Alexandra" and confirms who is depicted on the icon.
