This icon venerates St. John the Baptist in his martyrdom. John publicly rebuked King Herod for his unlawful life, unafraid of the powerful. For this he was cast into prison, and then at the request of Herodias his head was cut off.
Thus the greatest among the prophets sealed his preaching with blood, becoming a martyr of truth. The feast of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist (11 September) is kept with strict fasting. Before this icon the faithful pray for the courage not to betray the truth before anyone, and for steadfastness in faith.
