St. John the Baptist, the Forerunner of the Lord, is often depicted in Orthodox iconography in a special type known as the "Angel of the Desert." This type arose from Christ's words: "This is he of whom it is written: Behold, I send my messenger before thy face" (Mt 11:10). In the icon John is shown standing, with wings, clothed in the virgin desert garment of animal hair, holding in his hand a platter with his own severed head - a direct iconographic reference to his martyrdom. The background is blue, and the Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ Ο ΠΡΟΔΡΟΜΟΣ ΚΑΙ ΒΑΠΤΙΣΤΗΣ identifies him.
This is one of the most complex iconographic compositions in Orthodoxy, for in a single image it unites prophet, desert ascetic, herald and martyr. The Church celebrates St. John the Baptist several times throughout the year, and on 29 August (11 September) the Beheading of St. John the Baptist is commemorated.
