St. Ephraim the New (1384 to 1426) was a monk at a monastery in the mountains near Nea Makri in Greece. When pirates attacked the monastery they tortured him for a long time and finally put him to death cruelly. He remained forgotten for centuries, until a nun in 1950, led by an inner prompting, uncovered his relics.

Since then St. Ephraim appears to the faithful and helps them in remarkably quick and tangible ways, which is why many call him the swift helper of our time. His feast days are 5 May and 3 January. Before his icon the faithful pray in urgent need, for healing, for work, and for help when there seems to be no way out.
