St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki is one of the most venerated saints in the Orthodox world and patron of Thessaloniki. The Myrrh-streaming Great Martyr - as the Church calls him - suffered during the reign of Emperor Diocletian, and the fragrant oil that flowed from his relics brought healings for centuries. In this icon Demetrius is depicted not as the Myrrh-streaming, but as a heavenly warrior: in golden armour, on a chestnut horse, with spear raised, trampling and overcoming the enemy beneath the horse's hooves. In the background are the walls and towers of Thessaloniki. The Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΣ clearly names him.
This equestrian icon is dynamic and powerful - an iconographic type that speaks of protection, strength and support for the faithful in trials. The Church celebrates St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki on 26 October (8 November by the new calendar), which is one of the greatest name feasts in Serbia - Mitrovdan.
