Saint Tryphon is a Christian martyr from the 3rd century, born in Phrygia in Asia Minor, who from childhood became renowned for the gift of healing people and animals and the power to cast out unclean spirits. The Greek inscription on the icon, Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΤΡΥΦΩΝ (Saint Tryphon), confirms who is depicted. On this icon he is presented as a beardless young man with dark hair, with a halo around his head, wrapped in a cloak over a light tunic with a gold-decorated hem. In his hand he holds an open casket, while at his feet a reptile is depicted - a reminder of the tradition of the demon he drove away through prayer. He suffered for the faith during the reign of Emperor Decius, and ever since the faithful have invoked him as a swift helper in times of trouble.

Saint Tryphon is especially venerated as the protector of vinedressers, winemakers, gardeners and all who work the land; the faithful pray to him for the fruitfulness of vineyards and fields, for health and for deliverance from every evil. His feast day, Tryphon's Day, is celebrated on February 14 (February 1 by the old calendar) and many families keep it as their family patron saint feast (krsna slava). The icon finds its place in the holy corner of the home, on the household iconostasis or in a prayer corner, and makes a beautiful and meaningful gift for a patron saint feast, name day, baptism or as a blessing for a vinedresser and host.
