Saint Tryphon (3D Icon)

Saint Tryphon was born in Phrygia, in Asia Minor. As a boy he tended geese, and even then, according to tradition, he healed the sick through prayer. He suffered for Christ in the middle of the third century, under the emperor Decius. In Serbia his feast, Trifundan on 14 February, is the day of vine growers and winemakers, when the vines are traditionally given their first pruning.

He is shown here as a young man at full height, in a purple cloak over a light robe with a gold hem. In his right hand he holds the slender cross of a martyr, and in his left an open gold casket. A goose stands at his feet, a reminder of his childhood, and the Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΤΡΥΦΩΝ runs across the top.

The figure and the green ground are printed on a cut-out mounted on top of the dark board as a second layer, so Saint Tryphon stands out from the background. That is what makes this a 3D icon. The gold halo and the lettering are in relief, and the edge of the board is cut in a wave.
