Saint Spyridon was born in Cyprus in the 4th century and, before he became Bishop of the city of Trimythous, he was a humble shepherd - which is why he is remembered by his recognizable woven shepherd's cap that we also see on this icon. He became renowned for his deep faith, his mercy toward the poor and his many miracles, which is why the Church venerates him as the Wonderworker. According to tradition, at the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea he bore witness to the mystery of the Holy Trinity by drawing forth both fire and water at the same time from a single brick. On this icon he is depicted in bishop's vestments, with an omophorion adorned with crosses, holding the Gospel in his hand. The Greek inscription "Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΣΠΥΡΙΔΩΝ Ο ΤΡΙΜΥΘΟΥΝΤΟΣ Ο ΘΑΥΜΑΤΟΥΡΓΟΣ" means "Saint Spyridon of Trimythous, the Wonderworker".

The faithful pray to Saint Spyridon for help in seemingly hopeless situations, for health, for resolving material difficulties and for the protection of home and family. His relics rest on Corfu, where they have been the destination of many pilgrims for centuries. The icon finds its place in the holy corner of the home, on a home iconostasis or in a prayer nook, and it also makes a beautiful and meaningful gift for a family patron saint feast (krsna slava), a baptism, a name day or a wedding. Saint Spyridon is celebrated on December 25th (December 12th according to the Julian calendar).
