Saint Spyridon of Trimythous (the Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΣΠΥΡΙΔΩΝ Ο ΤΡΙΜΥΘΟΥΝΤΟΣ means Saint Spyridon of Trimythous) was the bishop of the city of Trimythous on Cyprus and one of the most revered wonderworkers of the early Christian Church. According to tradition, before his episcopacy he was a shepherd, which is why he is always recognized on icons by the cap of woven wicker he wears on his head. He took part in the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea in 325 AD, where, according to tradition, he demonstrated the mystery of the Holy Trinity by squeezing an ordinary brick - from the brick a flame burst forth, water flowed, and clay remained, all at once. It is precisely that flame above his blessing right hand that we see on this icon as well. In his left hand he holds a red Gospel, and he is dressed in a blue omophorion with crosses and a bright sakkos, against a gold background.

The faithful pray to Saint Spyridon for health, for help in trouble and want, and for the resolution of difficult problems in life and material need, as to a great saint who comes quickly to aid. The icon finds its place in the holy corner of the home, on a household iconostasis, or in a prayer nook. It is also a meaningful and beautiful gift for a family patron saint day (krsna slava), a baptism, a name day, or as a blessing for a new home. Saint Spyridon is celebrated on December 12 by the Church (December 25 by the civil) calendar, and many Serbian families honor him as their family patron saint (krsna slava).
