Saint Sava, born Rastko Nemanjić, was the youngest son of the Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja and the first archbishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church. As a young man he turned to monastic life and devoted himself to the faith, and he later won independence for the Serbian church and laid the foundations of its spiritual life and learning. He is remembered as the enlightener of the Serbian people and the patron of schools and education. On this icon he is shown as an archbishop, in a white omophorion with brown crosses and a patterned sakkos, with a plain gold halo around his head and the calm gaze of blue eyes. Beside his figure his name is inscribed, СВЕТИ САВА (Saint Sava).
He is celebrated on Saint Sava's Day, January 27, which in Serbia is also honored as the school patron feast dedicated to him as an enlightener. People pray to Saint Sava for wisdom, progress in learning, and the keeping of faith, and many families honor him as their krsna slava (family patron saint).
