Saint Sava, born Rastko Nemanjic, was the son of Stefan Nemanja and the first Archbishop of Serbia, founder of the independent Serbian Orthodox Church and the greatest of Serbian enlighteners. On this icon he is depicted as a bishop, wearing a white omophorion draped over his shoulders, his calm and composed face conveying both spiritual authority and gentleness. His head is encircled by an ornate, richly decorated floral gold halo - a sign of holiness and eternal glory. Beside his figure appears the inscription СВЕТИ САВА (Saint Sava), and the whole scene is set within a deep burgundy border that lifts the figure out and lends it dignity.
Saint Sava is celebrated on January 27th, on St. Sava's Day, which is also the patron feast of Serbian schools. People pray to him for wisdom, enlightenment of the mind, success in study, and the keeping of faith and family. The icon sits beautifully in the home's icon corner, in a child's room or study, and in any space set aside for learning and work. It makes a warm and meaningful gift for a family patron feast (krsna slava), for pupils and students, and for anyone who holds the Serbian saint and enlightener in special reverence.
