Saint Sabbas the Sanctified (439-532) is one of the great fathers of monasticism - founder of the Great Lavra in the Judean desert which still bears his name and where services have been held without interruption for fifteen centuries. His monastic typikon - the order of divine services - was adopted by the whole Orthodox Church, so that to this day our churches serve according to the Jerusalem typikon of Saint Sabbas the Sanctified. In the icon he is shown as an elder with a white beard, in a monastic habit with the crosses of the great schema and a red mantle, holding an unrolled scroll. Beside the halo stands the Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΣΑΒΒΑΣ.

A note: this is Saint Sabbas the Sanctified, the Greek saint of the Judean desert - not Saint Sava of Serbia. It was after him that Saint Sava of Serbia received his monastic name. In this piece the icon is mounted on a dark board with metal cross-fittings and brass studs - the look of the old metal-clad icons of monastery treasuries. He is celebrated on 5 December.
