Saint Porphyrios the Kafsokalyvite (with vigil lamp)

Saint Porphyrios the Kafsokalyvite (Evangelos by his secular name) was a Greek monk and priest, known for the gift of clairvoyance, a warm and joyful faith, and wise spiritual counsel. As a young man he went to Mount Athos, to the Skete of Kafsokalyvia, from which he took his name, and later spent decades guiding a multitude of the faithful. On this icon he is shown from the waist up, in dark monastic robes and a kamilavka (monastic cap), with a long gray beard and a gentle face lined by years of prayer. In his hand he holds a scroll bearing his famous message - that Christ should be loved above all and that in Him is everything that is beautiful. The Greek inscription "Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΠΟΡΦΥΡΙΟΣ" means "Saint Porphyrios".

The faithful pray to Saint Porphyrios for spiritual comfort, for peace of soul, for healing, and for the right word in difficult decisions, since he became renowned as a caring spiritual father and consoler. Because of the attached vigil lamp, this icon is meant to stand in the holy corner of the home, on a home iconostasis, or in a prayer corner, where the lit flame accompanies prayer.
