Saint Phanourios

The inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΦΑΝΟΥΡΙΟΣ is written on either side of the halo. Saint Phanourios is shown as a very young man, almost a boy, in a red cloak over a grey-blue tunic, a cross in his right hand and a tall lit candle in his left. His name comes from the Greek word meaning to reveal, to bring to light, so cross and candle together say the same thing: what was lost or hidden is shown.

His icon was found on Rhodes, in the ruins of an old church, and because of that very circumstance people have turned to him ever since whenever something goes missing - a document, a key, a ring, but also news of someone of whom nothing is known. His veneration carries with it the custom of baking a cake and taking it to church to be blessed, in thanksgiving and for the repose of his mother. He is commemorated on 27 August. The piece is made with a deep red border and a gilded ground with a floral halo.
