Saint Phanourios (Full Figure, Rustic Edge)

This is the second way Saint Phanourios is shown - not half-length as a youth, but at full height and in the armour of a Roman soldier, a red cloak over his shoulder and wrappings on his legs. In his right hand he holds a cross with a lit candle at its top, in his left an unrolled scroll bearing a Greek prayer. The inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΦΑΝΟΥΡΙΟΣ is written large across the gilded ground, and the workshop mark stands at the foot.

The armour is not artistic licence: Phanourios is honoured as a soldier-martyr, and the scenes of his suffering are painted along the borders of the original icon on Rhodes. This version therefore carries a different tone from the half-length image - less tenderness, more endurance. The board is cut rustically, with irregular wavy edges, and the gold is deliberately left with patina so the icon looks older than it is.
