Saint Petka, whom the Greeks honor under the name Saint Paraskeva, is one of the most beloved and most venerated women saints among the Orthodox people. She devoted her life to prayer, fasting and ascetic struggle, in quiet devotion to Christ. On this icon she is shown as a nun, in dark monastic robes and veil (maphorion), with a golden halo around her head. In her right hand she holds a small cross - a sign of faith and suffering for Christ, and in her left a shallow bowl with two eyes, the recognizable symbol under which the faithful pray to Saint Petka for the health of their eyes and sight. The inscription in Greek, Η ΑΓΙΑ ΠΑΡΑΣΚΕΥΗ, means "Saint Paraskeva," the name under which she is known among the Serbian people as Saint Petka.

The faithful pray to Saint Petka for health, healing and the protection of home and family, and since ancient times she has been called upon especially in eye ailments and difficult trials of life, as a swift helper and comforter. Among the Serbian people, many families honor her as their patron saint (krsna slava), Petkovica, celebrated on October 27. This icon with an oil lamp finds its place in the holy corner of the home, on the family iconostasis or in a prayer nook, where the lit lamp before the image of the saint brings warmth and peace. It makes a worthy gift for a patron saint day, name day, baptism or wedding, as well as for anyone who especially venerates Saint Petka.
