Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker (antiqued gold background)

Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker (Saint Nicholas of Myra) is one of the most venerated saints in Orthodoxy, Archbishop of the city of Myra in Lycia, known for his mercy, his protection of the innocent and his many miracles both during his life and after his repose. On this icon he is depicted as a grey-bearded elder with a gentle face, in hierarchical vestments - a red (burgundy) phelonion and a white omophorion with black crosses, his right hand raised in blessing. In his left hand he holds a richly adorned Gospel set with precious stones, a sign of his hierarchical office and his faithfulness to the word of Christ. The Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΝΙΚΟΛΑΟΣ means "Saint Nicholas" and confirms the identity of the saint. The antiqued gold background and the dark, rustic edges give the icon the look of an old, patinated holy relic.
