Saint John the Baptist, the Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord, is the last prophet of the Old Testament and the one who prepared the way for Christ. He preached repentance in the wilderness and baptized Jesus in the waters of the Jordan, which is why the Orthodox Church venerates him as one of the greatest of all saints. On this icon he is shown as a bust, holding a double cross-staff - the sign of his preaching and of his preparation for the coming of the Savior. A red halo rises above his head, and beside his face stands the Cyrillic inscription СВ. ЈОВАН КРСТИТЕЉ. His gaze is serious and focused, just as the iconographic tradition portrays him - a stern ascetic and a faithful witness to the truth.
Among the Serbian people, Saint John is honored as a krsna slava (family patron saint) - Jovanjdan (the Synaxis of Saint John the Baptist, January 20), and the Beheading of Saint John is also widely observed. People pray to him for repentance, steadfastness in faith, and perseverance on the right path.
