Saint Iakovos Tsalikis

Saint Iakovos Tsalikis (Greek Ἰάκωβος Τσαλίκης, 1920-1991) was abbot of the Monastery of Saint David the Elder on the island of Evia in Greece, and one of the best-known elders of modern times. In 2017 the Ecumenical Patriarchate entered him into the diptychs of the saints. In the icon he is shown in a black monastic habit, with a long white beard, holding in his hands an icon of Saint David of Evia - the saint in whose monastery he spent his life and at whose relics he served. Beside the halo stands the Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΙΑΚΩΒΟΣ Ο ΤΣΑΛΙΚΗΣ.

It was said of Elder Iakovos that he had the gift of discernment and recognised people before they had spoken, but he is remembered above all for his humility and for the fact that he turned no one away. The icon of a modern saint carries a particular strength - it reminds us that holiness is not something from distant centuries but something possible today as well.
