Saint Menas was born in Egypt and served as a Roman soldier during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. When the persecution of Christians began, he left military service and withdrew into solitude, and then openly confessed his faith in Christ and suffered a martyr's death for it. He is venerated as a great martyr and is one of the most respected holy warriors, alongside Saint George and Saint Demetrius. On this icon he is depicted on horseback, with gray hair and beard, in military armor over a green tunic, with red-orange leather straps around his waist and a flowing cloak, holding a spear and a shield, while a fortified city and a rocky landscape can be seen in the background. The Greek inscription "Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΜΗΝΑΣ Ο ΑΙΓΥΠΤΙΟΣ" means "Saint Menas the Egyptian".
