Saint George the Victorious is one of the most venerated Christian great martyrs, a soldier of the Roman army who gave his life for his faith in Christ. This icon shows him as a young man, bust-length, with thick curly hair, in military armor and a red cloak draped over his shoulder. His figure is accompanied by the Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ Ο ΤΡΟΠΑΙΟΦΟΡΟΣ - Saint George the Victorious. In Orthodox tradition he is known as the slayer of the dragon, a symbol of faith's triumph over evil, yet this icon portrays him at peace, as a young warrior and martyr. His gaze is calm and steady, and his armor recalls the spiritual battle he fought to the very end.

Among the Serbian people, Saint George is celebrated as Djurdjevdan on May 6th, and his feast is one of the most widely kept patron saint days (krsna slava) among Serbs. People pray to him for courage, protection, and strength in times of trial, and he is especially honored by soldiers, farmers, and all who bear his name. The icon sits beautifully in a home's icon corner or prayer nook, and makes a special gift for Djurdjevdan, a name day, or a baptism. Give it to someone seeking inner strength and protection along their path.
