Saint George (Narrow Panel)

Saint George the Great Martyr, called the Victory-bearer, was an officer of the Roman army from Cappadocia. When the emperor Diocletian began his persecution of Christians, George confessed the faith to his face, gave his estate away to the poor, and after long torture was executed in the year 303. In Serbia his feast, Djurdjevdan on 6 May, is one of the most widespread family patron days and marks the start of the herding and farming year.

He is not shown here on horseback above the dragon, but in half figure: young, with thick curled hair, in scaled armour with a red cloak thrown across his shoulder and a slender spear in his hand. This is the older, Byzantine way of depicting him, where what is shown is not the deed but the face. The Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ runs across the top.

The panel is narrow and elongated, with an arch cut by hand on one side only, so the edge is not symmetrical. The halo and the lettering are worked in relief, so the gold shifts as the light moves through the day. The narrow format is deliberate: for a narrow wall, a door frame, a shelf or an icon corner where a wider piece will not fit.
