Saint George (3D Icon)

Saint George, known in Church tradition as George the Victory-bearer, was an officer of the Roman army from Cappadocia. During the persecution under Diocletian he openly confessed that he was a Christian, gave his estate away to the poor, and after long torture was executed in the year 303. In Serbia his feast, Djurdjevdan on 6 May, is one of the most widespread family patron days.

He is not shown here on horseback but in half figure, face to face with whoever prays before him: young, with thick curly hair, a red cloak thrown over his shoulder and armour with gold ornament. The halo is larger than on the other icons in this series and is covered entirely with gold ornament in relief. The Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ runs across the top.

The icon is made in two layers: the image of Saint George sits on a cut-out mounted over the dark board, so it stands clearly apart and casts a soft shadow. That is why we call it a 3D icon. The gold ornament on the halo catches the light at an angle.
