Saint Euphrosynus the Cook

Saint Euphrosynus the Cook was a simple, unlettered monk who spent his life in the monastery kitchen, serving the brethren in silence and obedience. Though many looked down on him for his humble work, it was through meekness and devoted service that he attained paradise. Tradition tells how a priest once saw the garden of paradise in a dream, and within it Euphrosynus, who gave him three paradise apples - and upon waking, he truly found them at his side. On this icon the saint is depicted holding a branch of paradise apples and clothed in a red robe, with the Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΕΥΦΡΟΣΥΝΟΣ Ο ΜΑΓΕΙΡΟΣ (Saint Euphrosynus the Cook). His image reminds us that even the humblest work, done with love, is raised up to holiness.
